Restaurant kitchen display systems, without the hype

A kitchen display system (KDS) is a screen — or a set of screens — that shows tickets to prep instead of (or as well as) a paper printer. In a QR ordering restaurant, those tickets originate from the guest phone.

The display only works if each station sees relevant work and someone is accountable for tapping status. A beautiful idle screen helps nobody at 9pm.

Think in stations, not one firehose

A single scrolling list of every item in the building trains people to ignore it. Splitting by station — grill, pantry, dessert — is how a KDS earns attention. HalaQR supports multi-station setups on plans that include them.

Status is a contract with the floor

Preparing and ready are promises to the waiter. If cooks do not update, the waiter will walk the line anyway, and you have bought a second place to look.

Why QR tickets change the KDS job

Paper tickets are often rewritten by a waiter. QR tickets arrive typed, with modifiers, tied to a table. The KDS should preserve that structure rather than flattening it into a nickname for the dish.

FAQ

Is a KDS only for large hotels?

No. Owner-led restaurants use station boards when they split hot and cold, or when the pass cannot hear the whole line. Size of venue matters less than whether tickets are structured.

Does HalaQR replace every printer?

Not necessarily. Some venues keep a printed ticket. HalaQR can show live status on boards and still support printing where you configure it.
